Tricked by ubc

last friday, we, my group, were all assigned for 1 more unit of TA in the following term because our supervisor's research account was in debt. in fact, his account has been in debt for years and i was told that this was pretty normal for new professors. somehow, department or university will bear with it and the professors will earn enough "$$" from who-knows-where to pay it off in yearssssss. the worst thing is, ubc suspends derek's account. which means, no more $$ to buy chemicals or equipments. in that case, how can a lab be running? no production = no result = no more $$. derek said he didn't know if ubc is using this to threaten the government for more funding towards scientific research @ ubc. but as graduate students, we are suffering RIGHT NOW. we don't even have a chance to fight or object it. we were JUST TOLD A WEEK before school starts. it's not fair. my labmates even claimed they would switch to other school if nothings gonna be done. we may even have no paid in the coming summer. the summer paid is supposed to be coming from supervisor's account n no TA jobs will cover it.

in the start of our program, we were guaranteed to do at most a certain amount of TA units unless you have scholarship to cover it. now it's like, in the middle of your contract, your job description is changed. where's the trust? is that how the world runs now?

derek said it's gonna be a tiny thing n don't make it too big. after you graduate, make real money n u won't even remember. focus on the future thing.... what happen now will become history. not even noticeable. right. but i m suffering it now! so?

i m not actually worrying abt $$ coz i m still living w/ my parents and i got a scholarship this year plus i m gonna leave soon. what abt those who don't? how can they survive through this sudden change? can they still afford to live in vancouver?
